Worship for all ages, together

Welcome! I’m Dr. Will Whittaker, and since 2017 I’ve been writing here about intergenerational worship — the conviction that the church is at its healthiest when all generations worship, serve, and grow together. With more than 150 posts in the archive, it can be hard to know where to begin. This page is your front door: five places to start.

1. Why I care about this

It started with my grandfather, singing beside me in the adult choir when I was fifteen. I’m a Champion of Intergenerational Worship Because of My Grandfather tells that story — it’s the heart behind everything else on this site.

2. What “intergenerational” actually means

Having every age present in the room is not the same as worshiping together. Multi-generational or Intergenerational? They DO NOT Mean the Same Thing lays out the distinction that shapes this whole blog.

3. The biblical foundation

My three-part series Bringing the Church Back Together walks from Scripture to strategy: Part 1 — Biblical Foundations, Part 2 — First Steps, and Part 3 — Practical Application.

4. Choosing songs everyone can sing

The most practical question worship leaders ask me is about song selection. Familiarity: The Key to Selecting Worship Songs is my answer.

5. Is your church actually welcoming?

Most churches believe they’re welcoming — their music sometimes says otherwise. Creating a Welcoming Worship Environment Through Music offers an honest look.

Go deeper: the book

If you want the full framework — biblical foundations through practical implementation — my book Cultivating Intergenerational Worship (GC2 Press, 2022) brings it all together for worship leaders, pastors, and teams.
